What Is Gynaecomastia?
Gynaecomastia is an excessive enlargement of the male breast and may be present in one breast (unilaterally) or in both breasts (bilaterally).
What Are The Causes of Gynaecomastia?
Gynaecomastia is common in men of any age and may develop as a result of:
- Hormonal changes
- Weight gain
- Hereditary conditions
- Disease, such as liver disease
- Certain medication
- Use of non-prescription or recreational drugs, including anabolic steroids and marijuana
Do I Really Need Surgery?
Generally, gynecomastia isn’t a serious problem. Gynecomastia may go away on its own. If it persists, medication can help. Sometimes surgery is an option either with Liposuction to remove the fat or the removal of breast gland tissue using an ‘crescent incision’ around the areola.

What to expect after gynaecomastia surgery?
- Gynaecomastia is usually done as a day case under general anaesthetic. Most patients can go home the same day with a support person.
- There may or may not be drains inserted to minimise swelling.
- When you wake up after the operation you should have minimal pain as local anaesthetic will have been administered into the area. The anaesthetic lasts for about 6-12 hours.
- Pain/discomfort varies considerably from person to person. Medication to relieve pain will be prescribed.
- You will need to wear a compression garment for 4-6 weeks after surgery.
- There will be swelling and bruising after liposuction surgery. This will gradually subside with the help of bruising treatments, garment compression, and lymphatic drainage massages.
- Most patients return to work after 7-10 days, depending on the amount removed, and nature of work.
- No exercising for at least 2-4 weeks.
